UNIVERSITY PARK — Maybe it was the 1-hour, 18-minute rain delay before the first pitch.

Or it could have been the presence of Reggy, a disproportioned, purple mascot known as one of baseball’s top touring acts.

Or it just might have been a case of two teams hunting and barreling fastballs.

Whatever it was floating inside muggy Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, the State College Spikes and Auburn Doubledays were part of one long, intriguing display of developmental baseball Friday.

Once it all ended at 11:39 p.m., the Doubledays came out a 10-7 winner. Nothing about their victory appeared easy.

A seven-run frame propelled State College past the Auburn Doubledays 14-5 at Falcon Park in the New York-Penn League.

The Spikes (16-15), who took 2 of 3 in the series with double digits in runs in both wins, pounded out 14 hits as they climbed back above .500 and within 21/ 2 games of Pinckney Division-leading Jamestown.

Chase Lyles led the way with a 3-for-4 night, three RBIs and a two-run home run as every starting batter had at least one hit while taking advantage of four Auburn errors. Adalberto Santos and Pat Irvine each tripled and Mel Rojas Jr., a third-round draft pick for the parent Pittsburgh Pirates signed last week, doubled for his second hit in as many games since joining the Spikes over the weekend.

Von Rosenberg (1-4) allowed just one run over five innings, and was afforded with plenty of run support as State College (14-12) scored a pair of runs in the first and four in the third to gain a 6-0 lead. Matt Curry and Kelson Brown led the way offensively for the Spikes, with Curry going 3-for-3 and knocking in two runs. Brown drove in two runs in the Spikes’ big third inning, and notched his third RBI with a fourth-inning sacrifice fly.

UNIVERSITY PARK — Adalberto Santos donned his No. 50 jersey Sunday at Williamsport, where he stood by the Bowman Field dugout and watched his new team prepare to play the Crosscutters. Santos stood by the dugout for batting practice. He sat there once the game started.

It wasn’t an ideal roadtrip.

“Just being able to sit back and watch games is always tough,” he said.

Santos needed a physical to start baseball-related activities. He received one Monday morning and by 7:05 p.m. he was officially a professional.

The timing couldn’t have been better for the State College Spikes.

Three different times the State College Spikes faced a deficit, and all three times they battled back.

Behind a season-high 10 hits, the Spikes defeated the Batavia Muckdogs Monday night, 8-7 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The win was the first of the year for State College, which entered Monday’s game as the only winless team in the New York-Penn League.

“Everybody can kind of relax a little bit,” said right-handed pitcher Kevin Decker, who made his first professional start Monday. “… I think you’ll see a lot more runs scored now. Hitting’s contagious so I mean we got a couple hits in a row and then the floodgates open.”

STATE COLLEGE – The 2010 State College Spikes will come together for the first time this week at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, as several high picks from the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft and an array of players from across the globe are part of the roster for a three-day mini-camp that starts on Tuesday.

One look at the list of professional baseball players arriving in State College today produces a telling conclusion about their parent club.

Like the Pittsburgh Pirates themselves, the State College Spikes are relying on some of their level’s youngest players this summer.

The average age of the first 25 players on the Spikes’ roster is 20.6, which is considered young by New York-Penn League standards. The team plays its first game Friday at Williamsport.

BATAVIA, N.Y. — Not even another productive game from a former Centre County standout could slow the State College Spikes.

The Spikes belted 12 hits and received a strong start from Ricardo Paulino to rout Batavia 9-2 Saturday at Dwyer Stadium. The victory followed Friday’s 8-0 home victory against Brooklyn.

Destin Hood’s bat and glove carried the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 5-3 victory over the State College Spikes in a New York-Penn League game Friday night at Centennial Field.

With the bases loaded with two outs in the fifth inning, Hood made a diving catch on a line drive down the left-field line to end the inning and keep the Spikes lead at 2-1.
