Spikes Drop 5-3 Decision in Vermont

Lake Monsters top Spikes in spite of Irvine homer, four errors

BURLINGTON, VT – Despite Pat Irvine’s second home run of the year, two sacrifice flies in the eighth inning brought home the winning runs as the Vermont Lake Monsters topped the State College Spikes, 5-3, at Centennial Field on Friday.

State College (28-27) had a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth, but Destin Hood’s two-run homer off of Spikes starter Kyle McPherson tied it up. Hood then brought home the go-ahead run with his sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, and J.R. Higley followed with another sac fly to give Vermont (25-29) the win. UNIVERSITY PARK — The theme of State College Spikes hitting coach Brandon Moore’s pregame meeting with position players Sunday revolved around Jamestown starter Sandy Rosario.

State College Spikes’ Ty Summerlin turns the double play against Jamestown Jammers’ Rand Smith in the 1st inning on Sunday, August 2, 2009.

“B-Mo came in and said, ‘I’m not going to lie to you. He’s their best guy,’” left fielder Pat Irvine said.

Rosario then used a seven-inning forum to show why he’s one of top pitchers in short-season baseball.

Rosario pitched seven scoreless innings to lead the Jammers past the Spikes 7-0 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The soon-to-be 24-year-old right-hander allowed five singles and struck out six.

As the ball snuck behind State College Spikes catcher Craig Parry’s legs and rolled towards the backstop, Jamestown’s Rand Smith hustled down the first-base line.

The passed ball on the third strike allowed Smith to take first base and began an offensive explosion for the Jammers as they beat the Spikes 7-0 Sunday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
