Collegian: Spikes blow save in series opener

By Audrey Snyder

Collegian Staff Writer

For a team that was looking to win a game for the first time in three days, a late surge by the Batavia Muckdogs couldn’t have come at a worse time for the State College Spikes.

After holding a one-run lead heading into the ninth inning, the Spikes (34-36) defense faltered as they fell to the Muckdogs 8-7. The Spikes let the Muckdogs (36-34) begin the ninth inning with a double down the right field line and then watched as their lead slipped away beneath the bright lights at Dwyer Stadium.

With all the teams in front of them in the New York-Penn League wild card on their way to wins, the State College Spikes needed to keep pace.

Thanks to a three-run first inning the Spikes did just that, beating the Jamestown Jammers 8-1 to stay 3.5 games back in the wildcard race.

Spikes Capitalize on Jammers Miscues in Win

Walks, wild pitches and Jamestown errors aid Spikes bats in victory

JAMESTOWN, NY – The State College Spikes took advantage of walks and errors early and late, adding enough firepower to roll to a 9-1 win over the Jamestown Jammers on Tuesday night at Russell Diethrick Park.

State College (33-31) jumped out to a 5-1 lead through four innings, and added to it with help from two Jamestown (26-38) errors and nine walks issued by Jammers pitching. The nine free passes were the most allowed by a Spikes opponent all season.

Pennsylvania natives help spark Cyclones to win

UNIVERSITY PARK — A three-hit, three-error performance suggests little cheering.

That certainly was the case for the State College Spikes, who started life after the New York-Penn League All-Star break with a 6-1 loss to Brooklyn before 4,993 fans Wednesday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

But not everybody sat in silence.

Smatterings of applause accompanied shrewd pitches by Brooklyn starter Darin Gorski. Even some of the Cyclones’ nine hits earned applauses.

A simple explanation existed for the pro-Brooklyn behavior. Gorski, center fielder Justin Garber and designated hitter Scott Grimes are Pennsylvania natives who played major parts in the victory.
