UNIVERSTIY PARK — The Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies played three competitive and spirited games earlier this week.

State College’s Elevys Gonzalez takes a swing against Williamsport starter Siulman Lebron on Friday. Hits were at a premium for both teams as the Spikes turned to small ball to nip the Crosscutters 5-2.

Their New York-Penn League affiliates could be headed toward a similar series.

After a 52-day break extended by a 1-hour, 35-minute rain delay, the SawBuck Series sabbatical ended with the State College Spikes defeating the Williamsport Crosscutters 5-2 Friday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Spikes Fight Back to Beat ‘Cutters, 5-2

STATE COLLEGE, PA – The State College Spikes rebounded from losing a two-run lead in the top of the eighth inning to score three in the bottom half and defeat the Williamsport Crosscutters, 5-2, in a SawBuck Series matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Friday.

Aaron Baker led the offensive attack for State College (34-33) with an RBI triple in the sixth inning and a sacrifice fly to break a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning. Baker’s triple was his sixth of the season, tying him with teammate Pat Irvine and two other players for the New York-Penn League lead.

JAMESTOWN, NY-The Jamestown Jammers swept a doubleheader from the State College Spikes on Thursday at Russell Diethrick Park, winning game one, 4-2, in seven innings and game two, 3-2, in 11 innings thanks to a Kyle Jensen walk-off home run.

Jensen’s solo shot off of Alan Knotts (3-3) broke the tie in the second game on the first pitch of the inning. Knotts had allowed just one hit in 3 1/3 innings to that point, but took the loss for State College (33-33

Wednesday night, the State College Spikes were in the thick of the New York-Penn League wild-card race after a streak of four wins in five games.

But 24 hours later, the Spikes’ playoff hopes took a big hit after a Kyle Jensen walk-off homer gave the Jamestown Jammers (28-38) a 3-2 11-inning win that finished off a doubleheader sweep of the Spikes.

Holt’s triple in 10th sparks State College

FISHKILL, N.Y. — Brock Holt tripled and scored the game-winning run on David Rubinstein’s sacrifice fly as State College outlasted Hudson Valley 3-2 in 10 innings in a New York-Penn League baseball clash on Sunday.

The triumph gave the Spikes (26-25) the rubber game of their three-game series, their first road series triumph against a non-Pinckney Division team this season.

Collegian: Spikes come back in extras

State College Spikes infielder Brock Holt stepped to the plate in the 10th inning Sunday having an 0-for-4 day.

That was before he hit a leadoff triple in the top of the 10th and later scored the winning run in the Spikes’ 3-2 win over the Hudson Valley Renegades (25-26) at Dutchess Stadium.
