Collegian: State College cruises with strong pitching effort

When Leandro Castro doubled off of Michael Felix with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, it was the first hit given up by State College Spikes pitching Thursday night.

Three two-run doubles to go along with a stellar pitching performance propelled the Spikes (37-36) to an 8-1 victory against the Williamsport Crosscutters (39-34).

WILLIAMSPORT — A haunted event called “Terror at Bowman” is coming to the Williamsport Crosscutters’ venerable home next month.

The State College Spikes started the terror a month early.

Bowman Field, the setting of numerous haunted nights for New York-Penn League teams, has turned into the scene for some of the Spikes’ best 2009 work.

The shrieks continued Thursday as the Spikes defeated the Crosscutters 8-1 to improve to 4-1 in Williamsport.

Spikes Fight Back to Beat ‘Cutters, 5-2

STATE COLLEGE, PA – The State College Spikes rebounded from losing a two-run lead in the top of the eighth inning to score three in the bottom half and defeat the Williamsport Crosscutters, 5-2, in a SawBuck Series matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Friday.

Aaron Baker led the offensive attack for State College (34-33) with an RBI triple in the sixth inning and a sacrifice fly to break a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning. Baker’s triple was his sixth of the season, tying him with teammate Pat Irvine and two other players for the New York-Penn League lead.

Collegian: Spikes pitcher benched after DUI charges filed

A State College Spikes pitcher charged with DUI early Friday morning was benched over the weekend and is awaiting a decision from Pittsburgh Pirates officials regarding his future with the team.

In addition to the DUI charges, Michael R. Felix, 24, is charged with not using his turn signals while driving a black Ford Mustang at the intersection of North Atherton Street and East Mitchell Avenue at about 2 a.m. Friday, Penn State police said.

The Vermont Lake Monsters rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday night and defeated the State College Spikes, 4-3, in a New York-Penn League baseball game at Centennial Field.
