CDT: Spikes squash Jammers

From CDT staff reports

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — The Jamestown Jammers were in a generous mood Tuesday evening.

Two errors and some pitching control problems by the Jammers helped the State College Spikes to an 8-1 win at Diethrick Park.

From CDT staff reports

FISHKILL, N.Y. — Brock Holt tripled and scored the game-winning run on David Rubinstein’s sacrifice fly as State College outlasted Hudson Valley 3-2 in 10 innings in a New York-Penn League baseball clash on Sunday.

The triumph gave the Spikes (26-25) the rubber game of their three-game series, their first road series triumph against a non-Pinckney Division team this season.

CDT: Spikes balanced behind the plate

UNIVERSITY PARK — The State College Spikes feature an egalitarian situation at catcher. Miguel Mendez and Craig Parry entered Tuesday’s series opener against Aberdeen with identical statistics in three key categories.

Through 45 games, both catchers were batting .182 with 12 hits in 66 at-bats.

The numbers stunned manager Gary Robinson, who learned of the matching statistics after batting practice.

“It’s the best developmental process that I know,” he

said. “Nobody in the organization has put any pressure on me to make one of them a No. 1 and one of them a No. 2. The dictate I have from the organization is to make sure they are getting their playing time and to make sure they are getting their at-bats.”

State College stays confident at plate to blast Jamestown

UNIVERSITY PARK — The first time Aaron Baker took batting practice at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, he clobbered a ball over the right-field bleachers, creating a stir among teammates and coaches.

It took 105 professional at-bats for that raw power to translate into a game situation.

One night after the State College Spikes were stymied by two dynamic pitchers, Baker hit his first homer to spark Monday’s 11-2 victory over Jamestown at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Spikes top last season’s win total

AUBURN, N.Y. — It took 11 innings to do it, but the State College Spikes picked up win No. 19 on the season last night with a 7-4 victory over the Auburn Doubledays.

The win total matters because the Spikes won all of 18 games last season.

State College eclipsed the 2008 mark in Game 39 of the season. It also inched within a game of .500, stayed four games back of Mahoning Valley in the Pinckney Division, and finished a two-game sweep of Auburn.

Collegian: Lowell spins Spikes

State College Spikes rightfielder David Rubinstein couldn’t believe he was called out for basepath interference.

Rubinstein, followed by Spikes manager Gary Robinson, argued with umpire Chris Nguyen to no avail.

“The guy had interference,” Robinson said. “He thought that Rubinstein went too far out of the line. It’s a tough call, he called what he thought he had, it’s a double play.”

By the time State College Spikes third baseman Pat Irvine saw the throw to first base coming, it was already too late. Irvine — who was taking a lead from first base — was picked off in the bottom of the fourth inning, again taking away a potential run for the Spikes struggling offense.

“We collected some hits, we’re starting to get the barrel back to the ball which is a good sign,” Spikes manager Gary Robinson said. “We just need to get some hits with people on base, its about RBIs now and having an inning instead of squashing it.”

In their 5-1 loss, the Spikes tallied nine hits, but only got the single run to cross home plate. State College was shut down by poor base running that led to several players being picked off.
