Spikes Drop 5-3 Decision in Vermont
Lake Monsters top Spikes in spite of Irvine homer, four errors
BURLINGTON, VT – Despite Pat Irvine’s second home run of the year, two sacrifice flies in the eighth inning brought home the winning runs as the Vermont Lake Monsters topped the State College Spikes, 5-3, at Centennial Field on Friday.
State College (28-27) had a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth, but Destin Hood’s two-run homer off of Spikes starter Kyle McPherson tied it up. Hood then brought home the go-ahead run with his sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, and J.R. Higley followed with another sac fly to give Vermont (25-29) the win. The Lake Monsters committed four errors in the game, but still earned the victory
Collegian: Spikes’ effort should get them in playoffs
Tom Copain
Collegian Staff Writer
It’s Aug. 10, and the State College Spikes are in a playoff race.
I’ll give you a minute to re-read that.
The Spikes, the same organization that had an 18-56 record in 2008, entered their off day Monday in a much different scenario than this time last season. The Spikes have a winning record. They are 26-25. At this time last year, they were 11-40. In fact, they have eight more wins now than they did all of last season.

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY—The Hudson Valley Renegades were able to come from behind and hang on, topping the State College Spikes, 4-2, at Dutchess Stadium on Saturday night.
After State College (25-25) took the lead in the second inning on a Pat Irvine triple and an RBI groundout by Butch Biela, Hudson Valley (25-25) scored two runs on Tyler Bortnick’s double in the third. The Renegades would then extend their lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning, and while the Spikes drew back within a run on a Justin Byler RBI single in the sixth, they got no closer. Hudson Valley pushed home another run in the eighth on a successful suicide squeeze bunt by Bortnick to provide the final margin.
