Collegian: Roster stability benefits team

By Tom Copain

Since the end of June, the State College Spikes have been relatively quiet in terms of transactions.

After the hectic first few weeks where the parent club Pittsburgh Pirates were sending players in and out of the Short-Season A club, the roster has remained mostly unchanged. In fact, the club has only been involved in four roster moves since the calendar turned to July.

CDT: Spikes find new offensive power

From CDT staff reports

AUBURN, N.Y. — The State College Spikes received key offensive contributions from unlikely sources in an 8-5 victory over Auburn on Monday night.

Carlos Silva went 4 for 4 with an RBI and run scored while Kyle Saukko added three hits and scored two runs as the Spikes (18-20) rallied to knock off their Pinckney Division rival.

WILLIAMSPORT — The fastball traveled on a flat path. It arrived at the letters. It was thrown at the inopportune time to the wrong hitter.

The sequence convincingly halted the State College Spikes’ four-game winning streak.

Nelson Pereira surrendered a sixth-inning grand slam to Jeremy Barnes as the Spikes temporary joyride ended with an 8-1 loss at Williamsport on Monday at Bowman Field.

Rubinstein plated Evan Chambers for the final run of the game. Chambers, the Pirates third-round draft pick in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft, went 0-for-1 in his first professional appearance, but walked three times and drove in a run with a second-inning sacrifice fly.

By Audrey Snyder

Gary Robinson leaned back in his desk chair at his office Tuesday night, still wearing his uniform after the Spikes’ recent loss. The manager’s office, located in the locker room of Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, is just a door away from the lockers of 32 young men who hope to continue their dreams of playing professional baseball.

Robinson understands the importance of helping his players improve so they can be promoted out of State College, but he approaches his team with optimism.

Collegian: Returning players contribute experience

By Audrey Snyder

Last year’s Single-A Short Season seemed more like an eternity for many of the players on the State College Spikes’ roster.

After enduring the worst record in the New York-Penn League (18-56), the team saw changes in its management and front office. With new manager Gary Robinson at the helm, the 2009 Spikes believe the experience of their returning players will make a difference on the field and help new players adjust to professional baseball.
