Collegian: Spikes blow save in series opener

By Audrey Snyder

Collegian Staff Writer

For a team that was looking to win a game for the first time in three days, a late surge by the Batavia Muckdogs couldn’t have come at a worse time for the State College Spikes.

After holding a one-run lead heading into the ninth inning, the Spikes (34-36) defense faltered as they fell to the Muckdogs 8-7. The Spikes let the Muckdogs (36-34) begin the ninth inning with a double down the right field line and then watched as their lead slipped away beneath the bright lights at Dwyer Stadium.

BATAVIA, NY – Back-to-back home runs from Justin Byler and David Rubinstein fueled a State College Spikes offensive surge, but the Batavia Muckdogs came back to win in the bottom of the ninth, 8-7, at Dwyer Stadium on Monday.

STATE COLLEGE, PA – The State College Spikes rebounded from losing a two-run lead in the top of the eighth inning to score three in the bottom half and defeat the Williamsport Crosscutters, 5-2, in a SawBuck Series matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Friday.

Aaron Baker led the offensive attack for State College (34-33) with an RBI triple in the sixth inning and a sacrifice fly to break a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning. Baker’s triple was his sixth of the season, tying him with teammate Pat Irvine and two other players for the New York-Penn League lead.

Adams leads Muckdogs with two hits, two RBIs

BATAVIA, N.Y. — Not even another productive game from a former Centre County standout could slow the State College Spikes.

Happy homer: Solid pitching, Holt’s shot gets Spikes back to .500

UNIVERSITY PARK — Nelson Pereira started the top of the sixth by falling behind Chris Hopkins 3-1. The count limited Pereira to throwing fastballs. His intuition limited him to throwing those fastballs in certain spots.

Auburn Doubledays’ Ryan Goins (30) prepares to tag out State College Spikes’ Pat Irvine (39) as he attempts to steal second base the 2nd inning on Friday, July 31, 2009.

So Pereira uncorked two teasers.

Both high fastballs proved too irresistible for Hopkins to watch.

Pereira struck out Hopkins, Ryan Goins and Sean Ochinko during the sixth inning — one more sign the State College Spikes, who defeated Auburn 1-0 on Friday, have the same pitcher who led the rookie Gulf Coast League in ERA last season.
