Despite a 92-minute rain delay, the State College Spikes managed to keep pace in the New York-Penn League Wild Card race.

While Medlar Field at Lubrano Park was covered with mud, and rain carried on throughout the game, the Spikes (34-33) were able to overcome the sloppy conditions and beat the visiting Williamsport Crosscutters 5-2.

State College’s Elevys Gonzalez takes a swing against Williamsport starter Siulman Lebron on Friday. Hits were at a premium for both teams as the Spikes turned to small ball to nip the Crosscutters 5-2.

Their New York-Penn League affiliates could be headed toward a similar series.

After a 52-day break extended by a 1-hour, 35-minute rain delay, the SawBuck Series sabbatical ended with the State College Spikes defeating the Williamsport Crosscutters 5-2 Friday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Both numbers almost looked better today.

UNIVERSITY PARK — To move forward, the State College Spikes started thinking backward during the tail end of a three-game series against Aberdeen.

After two nights of offensive confusion, the Spikes scored in four different innings, including the first and eighth, to avoid a sweep with a 9-5 victory Thursday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
