-SPIKES START FINAL ROAD STRETCH: The State College Spikes finish off the 2009 season with a seven-game road trip, starting tonight with the first game of a two-game set against the Batavia Muckdogs at Dwyer Stadium. The Spikes took two of three games against the Muckdogs in a series last week in Batavia, and lead the season series, 5-3. Batavia leads the all-time series, 21-17.

5,757 fans fill the park as Spikes top attendance mark again

STATE COLLEGE, PA – Fueled by a record walk-up crowd of over 1,600, a record 5,757 fans smashed the attendance record at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the second time in less than two weeks as the State College Spikes played their home finale on Sunday, dropping a 5-3 decision to the Williamsport Crosscutters.

Despite a 92-minute rain delay, the State College Spikes managed to keep pace in the New York-Penn League Wild Card race.

While Medlar Field at Lubrano Park was covered with mud, and rain carried on throughout the game, the Spikes (34-33) were able to overcome the sloppy conditions and beat the visiting Williamsport Crosscutters 5-2.

UNIVERSTIY PARK — The Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies played three competitive and spirited games earlier this week.

State College’s Elevys Gonzalez takes a swing against Williamsport starter Siulman Lebron on Friday. Hits were at a premium for both teams as the Spikes turned to small ball to nip the Crosscutters 5-2.

Their New York-Penn League affiliates could be headed toward a similar series.

After a 52-day break extended by a 1-hour, 35-minute rain delay, the SawBuck Series sabbatical ended with the State College Spikes defeating the Williamsport Crosscutters 5-2 Friday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Spikes Fight Back to Beat ‘Cutters, 5-2

STATE COLLEGE, PA – The State College Spikes rebounded from losing a two-run lead in the top of the eighth inning to score three in the bottom half and defeat the Williamsport Crosscutters, 5-2, in a SawBuck Series matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Friday.

Aaron Baker led the offensive attack for State College (34-33) with an RBI triple in the sixth inning and a sacrifice fly to break a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning. Baker’s triple was his sixth of the season, tying him with teammate Pat Irvine and two other players for the New York-Penn League lead.

UNIVERSITY PARK — That cushy lead State College Spikes leadoff hitter Brock Holt helped build meant he didn’t stay on the field for the ending.

Holt

So Holt watched Friday’s final four innings from the dugout, a comfortable spot to revel in a rare feat.

But he rested without discussion of his accomplishment.

Holt never realized until after Friday’s 8-0 victory over Brooklyn before a Medlar Field at Lubrano Park-record 5,708 fans he had a hit in five consecutive innings.

STATE COLLEGE, PA – The largest crowd in the history of the State College Spikes filled Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to the tune of 5,708 spectators on Friday as the Spikes topped the Brooklyn Cyclones, 8-0.

Destin Hood’s bat and glove carried the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 5-3 victory over the State College Spikes in a New York-Penn League game Friday night at Centennial Field.

With the bases loaded with two outs in the fifth inning, Hood made a diving catch on a line drive down the left-field line to end the inning and keep the Spikes lead at 2-1.
