Collegian: State College scores 7 in shutout victory

By Tom Copain

Collegian Staff Writer

The State College Spikes scored seven runs and lost Monday night because they couldn’t hold a two-run lead in the ninth inning.

The Spikes had seven runs through the sixth inning Tuesday, and the ninth inning didn’t prove to be a problem. That’s because the State College pitching shutdown the Batavia Muckdogs (36-35) en route to a 7-0 Spikes win at Batavia.

The State College Spikes are 0-23 when trailing after six innings. Their record is 7-16 against non-Pinckney Division opponents.

Both numbers almost looked better today.

The offense went from unproductive to frantic during the ninth inning of Thursday’s 4-3 loss to Brooklyn at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

UNIVERSITY PARK — Examining the workload of Oneonta starters represents the best way to describe Thursday’s two-game conundrum.

In the opener, Luis Sanz pitched the first complete game in Medlar Field at Lubrano Park’s professional history.

In the nightcap, Cory Hamilton recorded just one out, the shortest start in the ballpark’s four years.

So, yes, the State College Spikes’ night went from brutal to beautiful in a hurry.
