After the record-setting crowd at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park had filed out, the State College Spikes still remained.

The whole squad took the field after the Spikes’ 5-3 loss to the Williamsport Crosscutters in the team’s home finale Sunday night that eliminated State College from playoff contention. The Spikes (34-35) first jogged in right field and then started fielding practice with manager Gary Robinson among those hitting to the rest of the fielders.

CDT: Sloppy play costs Spikes

UNIVERSITY PARK — State College Spikes pitcher Tyler Cox faced a brutal task during Sunday’s fifth inning against Williamsport.

The Crosscutters had a 2008 supplemental first-round draft pick at-bat, a hard-swinging designated hitter with two doubles on deck, one of the New York- Penn League’s top prospects in the hole, a runner on third and no outs.

Cox ensured Jiwan James never scored by striking out Zach Collier, Leandro Castro and Sebastian Valle.

But a failure to execute routine tasks resulted in a 5-3 loss before a Medlar Field at Lubrano Park-record 5,757 fans.

CDT: Spikes’ offensive punch continues against Batavia

Adams leads Muckdogs with two hits, two RBIs

BATAVIA, N.Y. — Not even another productive game from a former Centre County standout could slow the State College Spikes.

The Spikes belted 12 hits and received a strong start from Ricardo Paulino to rout Batavia 9-2 Saturday at Dwyer Stadium. The victory followed Friday’s 8-0 home victory against Brooklyn.

CDT: Spikes dispatch Lake Monsters

From CDT staff reports

BURLINGTON, Vt. — Three experienced players helped the State College Spikes record their first victory in Vermont.

Edward Garcia recorded four hits and Justin Byler and David Rubinstein added three each as the Spikes defeated Vermont 10-5 Sunday.

The victory was the Spikes’ first at Centennial Field. The Spikes opened the series with two losses and went 0-2 during their first trip to Vermont in 2007.

BURLINGTON, VT-Edward Garcia became the second State College Spikes player to collect four hits in one game and was one of three Spikes with three or more hits as State College pounded the Vermont Lake Monsters, 10-5, at Centennial Field on Sunday evening.

Garcia joined Carlos Silva as the only players with four-hit games for State College (29-28), and knocked in two runs to help the Spikes’ offensive cause. Silva collected his four-hit game against Auburn on July 27. Justin Byler and David Rubinstein had three hits apiece for State College, as the Spikes collected 14 hits as a team. Rubinstein added two RBI in the game.

Happy homer: Solid pitching, Holt’s shot gets Spikes back to .500

UNIVERSITY PARK — Nelson Pereira started the top of the sixth by falling behind Chris Hopkins 3-1. The count limited Pereira to throwing fastballs. His intuition limited him to throwing those fastballs in certain spots.

Auburn Doubledays’ Ryan Goins (30) prepares to tag out State College Spikes’ Pat Irvine (39) as he attempts to steal second base the 2nd inning on Friday, July 31, 2009.

So Pereira uncorked two teasers.

Both high fastballs proved too irresistible for Hopkins to watch.

Pereira struck out Hopkins, Ryan Goins and Sean Ochinko during the sixth inning — one more sign the State College Spikes, who defeated Auburn 1-0 on Friday, have the same pitcher who led the rookie Gulf Coast League in ERA last season.

Collegian: Spikes sweep doubleheader with Scrappers

By Tom Copain

Collegian Staff Writer

It took the State College Spikes only one night to do something they hadn’t done in two weeks — start a winning steak.

After being rained out Thursday, the Spikes (16-19) swept a doubleheader Friday with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (20-15), thanks to a 4-3 win in game one and a 10-6 win in the second game. It’s the first time the Spikes have won two games in a row since July 9-10.
