CDT: Spikes’ roster in major shuffle mode

UNIVERSITY PARK — The State College Spikes went on a six-game roadtrip and returned to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park with a new team.

Spikes left-hander Mike Felix made his season debut with the team on Sunday against Mahoning Valley. He threw four innings of relief in a 5-4 Scrappers win.

OK, that’s stretching it. But today’s Spikes don’t resemble the group that started the season here earlier this month.

AUBURN, N.Y. — Hits were at a premium for the State College Spikes on Thursday night.

Auburn Doubledays starter Joel Carreno took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and kept the Spikes at bay in a 4-1 Auburn victory at Falcon Park.

The Doubledays, a Toronto Blue Jays affiliate who also took advantage of three State College errors, have won 11 of their 15 meetings with the Spikes in Auburn.

The State College Spikes opened the New York/Penn League season last night before a SRO crowd, but were completely overmatched by the Crosscutters.  Five of the Pirates’ 2009 draft picks, who have already signed contracts, are with the Spikes already, and made their professional debuts in the game:  LF Jose Hernandez, 2B(SS) Ty Summerlin, DH (OF) Pat Irvine, RHP Jason Erickson, and RHP Marc Baca.  Dutch South African player Brett Willemburg also made his pro baseball debut, coming in as a late-inning replacement at shortstop.  First-round pick C Tony Sanchez is scheduled to join the team tomorrow, for a few games before being moved to the West Virginia Power roster next week.  Ninth-round pick, INF Brock Holt has also signed and has been added to the Spikes’ roster.

Crosscutters pound Spikes for 19 hits in run-away victory

UNIVERSITY PARK — Williamsport’s Michael Dabbs tripped going from second to third base during the fifth inning of Friday’s New York-Penn League opener. His knee touched the ground and he looked toward manager Chris Truby in the third base coach’s box.

Truby continued to wave his right arm, motioning Dabbs to score.

One can only wonder how tired Truby’s arm is after receiving plenty of opportunities to send runners home.

The Crosscutters once again spoiled a State College Spikes’ home opener by scoring eight runs during the fifth inning of a 15-2 victory before 5,593 fans at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Sell-Out Crowd Witnesses Spike Fall

June 19, 2009 – New York-Penn League (NYPL) State College Spikes

A standing-room only sellout crowd of 5,593, the third largest in the history of Medlar Field at Lubrano Park was on hand for Opening Night as the Williamsport Crosscutters downed the State College Spikes, 15-2.

Medlar Field at Lubrano Park also welcomed its largest walk-up crowd ever as the Spikes inaugurated their schedule of Daily Fan Value Promotions with 4 for $44 Friday, giving fans the opportunity to purchase four Diamond Club seats behind home plate, four small sodas, and four hot dogs for only $44.

The crowd was just 78 fans short of the all-time record for single-game attendance at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. 5,671 fans saw the Spikes take on the Crosscutters on June 20, 2007.
