WILLIAMSPORT — For the third straight inning during the waning stages of a close game, the State College Spikes’ leadoff hitter reached base, giving a baby-faced team another reason to think this might be the evening it solves the Williamsport Crosscutters.

Matt Skirving then followed Kelson Brown’s ninth-inning leadoff single by lacing a ball toward center field. On the ball’s path to center field, attentive Spikes received further evidence of the looming challenges.

Williamsport shortstop Edgar Duran dove and the ball skidded into his glove. From the dirt, Duran flipped the ball to second baseman Cesar Hernandez who fired to first baseman Jeff Cusick.

The double play ended a potential rally and sent the Spikes to a 4-2 defeat Sunday at Bowman Field. The margin of defeat remained unchanged from Games 1 and 2 of this 76-game season.

The venue may have been different, but the State College Spikes home-opener yielded the same outcome as their season-opener.

In front of Saturday night’s record-crowd of 5,775 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, the Spikes (0-2) struggled to get timely hits and lost to the Williamsport Crosscutters, 5-3, the same score as Friday night’s game.

-CROSSCUTTERS TAKE SAWBUCK LEAD: The State College Spikes continue the fifth edition of the SawBuck Series tonight against the Williamsport Crosscutters at Historic Bowman Field. With last night’s win, the ‘Cutters now lead the all-time series, 26-24, with 13 of those wins coming at home.

-LAST GAME: A Medlar Field at Lubrano Park record, standing room only crowd of 5,775 witnessed the Spikes’ 2010 Home Opener, as State College fell to Williamsport, 5-3. The attendance mark broke the previous record of 5,757, set on August 30, 2009 in last year’s home finale (also against Williamsport). Miguel Mendez doubled and scored in the contest. 19-year-old Zack Dodson did not earn a decision after allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over four innings of work. Dodson was making just his second pro appearance. Chase Lyles was the lone Spike with a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

STATE COLLEGE – A standing room only crowd of 5,775 fans filled Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Saturday and set a brand-new State College Spikes attendance record as the Spikes fell to the Williamsport Crosscutters, 5-3, in their first home game of the 2010 season.

The game marked the second consecutive record-breaking crowd at the ballpark. The Spikes (0-2) hosted the Crosscutters (2-0) in front of 5,757 fans in last season’s home finale on August 30, 2009.

The record-setting crowd also enjoyed a fun-filled day before settling into their seats, with the Summer Kickoff Carnival from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Porter Gardens, and a special pre-game musical performance by the Brew Devils. Former Penn State star wide receiver and current Philadelphia Eagle Jordan Norwood was also on hand to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

UNIVERSITY PARK — When Jordan Norwood was a high schooler growing up in State College, the chances that he would one day throw out a first pitch at a minor league baseball game in his hometown were slim and none.

How things have changed in the last half dozen years.

State College now has a baseball team and Norwood is vying for a spot on the Philadelphia Eagles’ active roster after enjoying an improbable record-breaking career at Penn State.

The Spikes and Norwood converged for the team’s fifth home-opener on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Norwood, a former standout football and basketball player at State College High School, started it all off.
