Spikes add two 2010 draft picks to roster.

The Pirates signed two of their 2010 draft choices and assigned them to State College. They are fifth round pick Tyler Waldron and 22nd round pick Adalberto Santos. Both Waldron and Santos were drafted out of Oregon State who were eliminated from the NCAA baseball playoffs in ther Regionals after making the tournament for the fifth time in the last six years. Waldron is a pitcher and Santos an infielder.

With the Pirates completing a literally last minute deal with their #1 pick (and #2 overall pick in the draft) Pedro Alvarez, Spikes fans might be thinking that they’ll soon have a reason to go back out to the ball park.

Not so fast.

There’s been no announcement yet as to whether Alvarez will actually make an appearance in a Spikes uniform. Unfortunately, the most likely scenario sees Alvarez just not starting his professional career until this fall in the Arizona Fall Instructional league. And double unfortunately, it’s unlikely that Alvarez will be assigned here for next season either.

Pirates sign Michael Colla

The Pirates announced the signing of their 14th round draft pick RHP Michael Colla from the University of Arizona. Colla has joined the Spikes and will be activated at a later date.

Hot off the press – Hague and Mercer to Hickory

Two of the Spikes more solid performers, Matt Hague and Jordy Mercer have earned promotions to Hickory.

Mercer’s home run against Williamsport Wednesday must have caught someone’s eye. He appeared in six games for the Spikes and was hitting .250 for the Spikes with just 2 RBI, including the solo home run.

On paper, Hague was a bit more successful. He had appeared in seven games and was hitting a solid .333 including multiple hits in three of his last four games.

Mercer was a 3rd round pick and Hague a 9th.

Congrats to them and good luck in their baseball careers.

In related news, ex-Spike Miles Durham and Jose Luis De Los Santos were promoted from Hickory to Lynchburg and ex-Spike Brian Friday was put on the disabled list at Durham. Those were the spots that needed filling by Hague and Mercer.

4th round pick: shortsop Chase d’Arnaud from Pepperdine
39th round pick: pitcher Albert Fagan from Rockland Community College

UncleLar Take:

Mercer pitched and played shortstop for OSU, when the Pirates drafted him, they listed him a pitcher. When they signed him, they listed him as a shortstop. Curious which he’ll play here,

I’ve been able to identify some of the new guys on the Spikes who were neither on the team last year nor draftees from this year. Several of them I know but there are several that I can’t find any info on.

Stephen Suarez – catcher previously played in Rockies organization

Catcher Josue Peley – played for Gulf Coast Pirates last year
Pitcher Rudy Owens – played for Gulf Coast Pirates last year
Ryan Kelly – unknown

8th round pick: third baseman Jeremy Farrell from the University of Virginia
12th round pick: first baseman Calvin Anderson from Southern University A&M
18th round pick: shortstop Jarek Cunningham from Mount Spokane High School
41st round pick: catcher Chris Simmons from the United States Military Academy
42nd round pick: outfielder Cole White from the United States Military Academy

This brings the totals to 21 of the 50 draftees being under contract.

50th round pick: outfielder Craig Parry from South Dakota State University

The Pirates now have 16 draftees under contract. They’ll all be in State College this weekend working out for Pirate management awaiting word on whether their professional baseball careers will start in Bradenton or Happy Valley. Thirteen other guys who were on the team last will be joining them for the workouts in preparation for the season’s start on Tuesday.

7th round pick: shortstop Benjamin Gonzalez from Puerto Rico BB Academy High School
15th round pick: pitcher Christopher Aure from North Pole High School Alaska
25th round pick: Brian Leach pitcher from University of Southern Mississippi
27th round pick: Edwin Roman centerfielder from the Puerto Rico BB Academy High School

As high school signees, Gonzalez, Aure, and Roman are likely candidates to start their career out in Bradenton for the Gulf Coast Pirates. Leach, on the other hand, is probably pegged to be a Spike.
