Center fielder Mel Rojas, son of the former closer of the same name and a toolsy prospect over whom scouts debated, is on his way to PNC Park to sign a contract with the Pirates that last month drafted him in the third round, 84th overall.
Rojas, 6 foot 3, 200 pounds, is expected to take a ballpark tour and undergo medical examinations today, then sign his bonus contract Thursday. Apparently, he next may well report directly to Connecticut to join the short-season State College Spikes playing a series there.
