UNIVERSITY PARK — Neal Huntington’s focus is different than many other general managers.
Instead of mingling with colleagues Monday and Tuesday in Anaheim, Calif., Huntington watched three minor-league games, including two involving the State College Spikes.
Never mind the all-star break or the hullabaloo surrounding Tuesday’s game.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are in a developmental mode, thus the reasoning behind Huntington’s stop in State College, where he saw the Spikes thump Vermont 13-2 on Monday before falling 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon. Huntington also watched the Double-A Altoona Curve play Monday afternoon. The games here allowed Huntington to watch and meet 11 Spikes selected in last month’s draft for the first time.
