STATE COLLEGE – The State College Spikes tied a team record with 20 hits, including the first career home run for Matt Curry, and jumped on Vermont Lake Monsters pitching early and often to produce a 13-2 victory on Monday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
A crowd of 4,194 joined 414 dogs for Bob’s Bark in the Park, hosted by Bob the Baseball Dog, and witnessed State College (13-11) begin the fireworks early with a four-run first inning against Vermont (17-7) starter Matt Swynenberg (2-1), capped by Pat Irvine’s two-run double. The Spikes then touched Swynenberg for two more runs in the second, chasing the Lake Monsters ace from the mound after just two innings. Swynenberg entered the game with a 0.41 ERA, which increased by over two points to 2.62 by the time his outing ended.
