UNIVERSITY PARK — Homefield advantage can’t exist in the early stages of a short-season baseball season.
Or can it? On the day they never lose, the State College Spikes faced an opponent forced to play at 1 p.m. after traveling 250 miles following a 3-hour, 7- minute game the night before.
Advantage Spikes.
Still, the way they are playing, the Spikes don’t need favors from the creators of the New York-Penn League’s unfriendly holiday schedule.
The Spikes extended their winning streak to four games with a 4-3 victory before 4,131 fans Sunday at festive Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Victories on July Fourth are a State College tradition. The Spikes are 5-0 on the holiday.
