UNIVERSITY PARK — Forgetting the events of Wednesday’s disastrous top of the sixth inning might help the State College Spikes. While they try to shorten memories, they also might want to forget the inning’s precursor and aftermath.
Five players combined to commit a team-record seven errors as the Spikes fell to Batavia 12-3 before 2,576 fans, including some of the vociferous lot, at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
An ugly top of the sixth thwarted hopes of a third straight comeback victory. The Spikes committed three errors, including two on one play, during the inning. Batavia used the blunders to increase its lead from 4-0 to 8-0.
“We did just about everything you could possibly do that isn’t good,” Spikes manager Gary Robinson said.
