UNIVERSITY PARK — The New York-Penn League’s State College Spikes and Bradenton of the rookie Gulf Coast League seemed like logical 2010 starting points for Brooks Pounders, Zack Dodson and Zack Von Rosenberg.
But when Pittsburgh Pirates director of player development Kyle Stark and his staff pondered the pitchers’ futures, they had another consideration.
Stark said the decision came between sending the 19-year-olds to State College or full-season West Virginia. The Pirates ultimately shipped the teenagers to State College, where they are participating in the Spikes’ three-day minicamp, which started Tuesday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
